Family Optimist Club Approach

Sponsor

The Suncoast Optimist Club of Sarasota

Club 60460

Optimist Clubs have been facing declining and aging membership for several years now.  Some of these factors include the increasing complexity of life resulting in the lack of time, the decline of the traditional family unit, and the general erosion of community values.

Ironically, these are the very things Optimist Clubs could be helping more.  In answer to these problems we propose a new approach for some clubs.  We call this the Family Optimist Club Approach.  The goal is to bring in more families and family members into Optimist activity.  This would help families make better use of there time by spending time together at Optimist Club meetings and Projects.  It would also let younger ones get involved and stay involved creating a future adult membership base.  It would also help share values across generational lines.

This proposal consists of 3 elements:

  1. A family membership which would consist of dues reductions for adult members in one family of 2, 3, 4 or more members.

  2. A youth club at-large membership for young people affiliated with an adult Optimist Club, but without an active youth club.

  3. A committee to generate recommendations for clubs on how to operate in family friendly ways.

Some clubs even now employ this approach in varying ways with success.  Let us formalize and strengthen this movement for those clubs who wish to use it.
