Barry Binz Sr

Binz, Barry Sr.
Oct. 13, 1919 - July 13, 2010

Barry Binz Sr., 90, of Sarasota, formerly of Chicago, died July 13, 2010. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Manasota Memorial Park in Oneco. Survivors include his sons, Eric of White Plains, N.Y., Daniel of Sarasota; daughters Elizabeth Carver of Cosby, Tenn., Kay Murdoch and Rebecca Siegel, both of Sarasota; and eight grandchildren. In 1927, Barry Binz arrived in Sarasota from Chicago, at the age of seven, where his family was to play a strategic role in the early development of Sarasota. His father built the Binz Warehouse, on North Orange Avenue and the Binz home on Bayshore Road, both of which still stand. He entered the U.S. Marines in 1942, and as part of the First Marine Division was deployed to Guadalcanal and then to the Cape Gloucester Campaign on New Guinea. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Strickland McManis; his children, Patrick, Mark and Barry Binz Jr.; his stepson, Bruce McManis; a sister, Charlotte; and a brother, Frank Binz III. He graduated from the University of Florida law school in 1950, where he was a member of Sigma Chi. He practiced law in Sarasota for 46 years. He argued and won an anti-real estate monopoly case in front of the Florida Supreme Court. He campaigned for political office twice when he ran for the State Legislature as a Democrat in the '50s. He was a lifelong sailor, and was part of Captain Frank Roberts' team several times in the Gulf of Mexico. He was a member of the Sarasota Yacht Club, Lipton Cup and Gulf Coast Yachting race teams. He also taught sailing to youth with the Sarasota Prams. He had a lifelong commitment to helping youth through his work with several Optimist Clubs of Sarasota, and served as lieutenant governor of Optimist International. He was a model father, and taught his children broad-mindedness, patience and integrity. He was completely committed to family, through the best and worst of times, and weathered life with quiet grace. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and the community. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Suncoast Optimist Club at P.O. Box 50482, Sarasota, FL 34232.
